| When is a good time to start my landscape project? | |||||||||||||||||||||||
| In Florida, it is possible to landscape virtually any day of the year. Of course there are optimum times- fall is generally a very good time due to less stress on plants for several reasons. | |||||||||||||||||||||||

| Should I install an irrigation system? | |||||||||||||||||||||||
| If you can squeeze it into your budget, I would definitely suggest an irrigation system. It will ensure that your investment/landscape will survive, it adds to the equity of your home, and it will save you a lot of time! | |||||||||||||||||||||||

| What type of sod should I use? | |||||||||||||||||||||||
There are several types of sod that are commonly used in North Central Florida. St. Augustine- The most commonly used in residential and commercial landscapes. It is most attractive. It produces a green to blue-green dense turf that is well adapted to most soils and climatic regions in Florida. It has relatively good salt tolerance and certain cultivars possess good shade tolerance. Establishment of St. Augustinegrass from sod is quick and easy. There are several cultivars commercially available. St. Augustinegrass, like most turfgrasses, has certain cultural and pest problems. It does not remain green during drought conditions without supplemental irrigation. It produces thatch under high fertilization and irrigation regimes. It has poor wear tolerance and will generally not stay green throughout the winter months in many parts of the state. The coarse leaf texture of most cultivars is objectionable to some people. The major insect pest of St. Augustine grass is the chinch bug, and there are currently no chinch bug resistant cultivars available. Grubs can also be a major insect pest. Some cultivars are also susceptible to diseases such as gray leaf spot, brown patch, take-all patch, and root rot. Additionally, there are no herbicides available to control hard-to-kill grass-type weeds that may become established in the turf. Bahia- This sod is commonly seen along the sides of roads. Bahia grass forms tall, unsightly seedheads throughout the spring, summer, and fall months. This necessitates mowing on a regular schedule. Because the seed stems are tough, it also makes it more difficult to mow than some other grass species. Bahia grass displays an open growth habit, which can result in encroachment of weeds into sparse areas. In addition, Bahia grass has a low tolerance for many herbicides, making chemical weed control difficult. It has a coarse leaf texture and provides less cushioning for recreational activities than some other species. It is not normally recommended for use as a lawn grass. Centipede- Centipede Grass is a low, medium textured, slow growing, but aggressive grass that can produce a dense, attractive, weed-free turf. It is more shade tolerant than Bermuda grass but less shade tolerant than St. Augustine. Since centipede produces only surface runners, it is easily controlled around borders of flower beds and walks. Centipede is the ideal grass for the homeowner who wants a fairly attractive lawn that needs little care. Centipede does not require much fertilizer or mowing, and compared to other lawn grasses, is generally resistant to most insects and diseases. It will, however, respond to good management and provide a very attractive turf. Centipede can be established from either seeds or sprigs. Since it is slow growing, it takes longer than Bermuda and St. Augustine to completely cover an area. Burmuda- Bermuda grass is a major turf species for sports fields, lawns, parks, golf courses, and general utility turfs. Bermuda grass has a fibrous, perennial root system with vigorous, deep rhizomes this is why it can be a nuisance within a landscape because it will grow into the beds.
